When Living Better Means Asking for Help

A flyer in the break room set John on a path toward better mental health.

John Roach has been a merchandising associate with Sam’s Club 8152 in South Point, Ohio, since November 2022. After working at a local grocery store for 12 years, the pay, insurance and benefits drew John to Sam’s Club. “I was making more day one at Sam's despite being at that other place for 12 years,” he admits with a smile.

Soon after he started at Sam’s, a flyer in the break room would set John’s life on an even better path.

Reading about Lyra, Walmart and Sam’s Club’s mental health partner, inspired John to reach out for help with his stress and anxiety.

Through Lyra, associates and eligible family members can have up to 20 therapy or mental health coaching sessions at no cost each year — even if you’re not enrolled in Walmart medical benefits. Services include:

  • Therapy and mental health coaching to help you manage stress, anxiety, depression, PTSD, as well as life’s various challenges, like parenting and loss.
  • Digital wellness tools that guide you through improving your sleep, controlling stress, improving relationships, and much more.
  • Resources for building a mentally healthy workplace, including live workshops and on-demand courses.

“There's never going to be a time when I'm just free of stress, but the amount of help that I've gotten from Lyra has been amazing,” John shares. “My goal with Lyra is to not necessarily get rid of the anxiety or stress, but just be able to work with it and be able to get to the point where it's not so overbearing.”

John especially appreciates how easy it is to use these services. He connects with his therapist virtually, through the Lyra app.

You log in, choose the issues that are most important to you, and the app matches you with a counselor. If that therapist isn’t a good fit, you can be matched with someone else. Sessions are virtual and counselors can suggest additional resources — like videos to watch or a journal to write in.

John has become a big advocate for Lyra and recommends it to other associates. “It’s definitely something worth doing,” John says.

“Mental health is so stigmatized in today's society,” he shares, adding that whether someone has stress or anxiety or another issue, just talking to a professional about it helps. “I think that's something that more people need to hear. More people need to be open to the idea of asking for help.”
